Having failed to qualify for the European Championships finals since 1996 Scotland face a tough task in their bid to reach the 2012 tournament. Having been drawn in a group including the World and European champions Spain, as well as the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Liechtenstein, Scotland will be battling the odds to reach the finals in Poland and the Ukraine.
Scotland versus Lithuania
Scotland kick off their campaign against the Lithuanians, and although the Baltic side are relative newcomers to international football, the teams are no strangers to one another, having been drawn together in the qualifying tournaments for the last three European Championships. The first meeting between the countries came in Vilnius in 1998, and ended in a goalless stalemate. Scotland were victorious in the return match at Hampden Park the following year, reaping a 3-0 win with goals from Hutchison, McSwegan and Cameron. The Scottish were less successful four years later however when they returned to Lithuania, a late penalty saw them slide to a 1-0 defeat in Kaunas. They reversed the result in the return match in Glasgow however, with Darren Fletcher grabbing the only goal. In the campaign for the 2008 championships Scotland again visited Kaunas, and gained their first win in Lithuania as goals from Dailly and Miller saw them to a 2-1 victory. Scotland then completed a third successive win over Lithuania with a 3-1 victory in Glasgow thanks to goals from Boyd, McManus and McFadden. Overall in six meetings Scotland have the edge over their opponents with four wins to one.
