The ubiquity of ATM cards and ATM machines have begun to make currency exchange counters at European airports and tourist areas obsolete. European bank branches are starting to get out of the business of tourism-related foreign currency exchange and traveler's check redemption for the same reason. The convenience of getting euros from an ATM machine cannot be beaten, especially since the exchange rate at hotels and foreign currency exchange booths is far less favorable.

For most American tourists, the best euro exchange comes from taking a large amount of cash out of an European ATM with a US bank or credit union that charges low foreign transaction fees. Then use the euros to pay for goods or services. Both credit card transactions and ATM cash withdrawals use a foreign exchange rate that's very close to the spot rate, but credit card transactions generally have very high fees and many European businesses only take cash.
